I am currently a junior here at UMBC majoring in Information Systems. I am a Korean American and have lived here in the United States for all my life. My parents were born and raised in Korea until they were in high school. They immigrated to America and began to attend Virginia Tech for their college education. I was raised in a Christian family and also lived most of my life in Howard County Maryland. In my area and county, I didn’t see much of a mistreatment or misrepresentation of Asian Americans. My family always got along well with their co-workers, neighbors, and other friends that weren’t of the same ethnicity. One thing I did see often was cliques of Asians. During my high school years, everyone was friends with everyone, but for some reason, Asians stuck with each other more than everyone else. I’ve always felt a sort of belonging in the sense where Asians were always together and had each other’s backs. Thinking back into the past, Asians were so wrongfully discriminated against. I am really curious to see how much has changed presently. There may not be any hateful crimes that happen in the light of day, but what happens in peoples’ minds or very discreetly, things could possibly still be happening.
