1. What is your organizations' main goal and how do you think that you guys are affecting the Asian American community?
- Hello, my name is John Yoon and I am the Vice President of the Korean Student Association. Our mission is to spread awareness and to share Korean cultures and traditions with the UMBC student body. We like to stress that our organization is not only open to Koreans, but to all.
- A trend among the majority of Asian Americans, through my own experiences, is their death of sociability. Whether it is the ability to communicate clearly or to identify themselves with others, Asian Americans seem to have a rough time socially adjusting. This is why an objective of the Korean Student Association is to address and facilitate the daily lives of its constituents. We have the opportunity to leave a lasting impression on an entire generation and we aspire to produce a profound effect.
2. How do you personally feel about how Asian Americans are represented within media?
- When I was young I always thought to myself, ‘Why do I never see any Asian people on TV?’ I always knew there were politics involved in being on TV but as the years went by I thought at least some amount of Asians would slip through the crack. Well, its 2014 now and there are several prominent Asian actors and actresses. Not only are we represented in the media but we have positive depictions. I admit that I have never given any thought to Asian representation in the media beyond this but there is absolutely no dissatisfaction from my perspective.
