The North American Intercollegiate Chinese Association
Director: Chang Chen
1. What is your organization's main goal and how do you think that you guys are affecting the Asian American community?
2. How do you personally feel about how Asian Americans are represented within media?
** Site Administrator Notes:
NAICA is not necessarily an Asian American club from UMBC. In fact this organization is similar to MAUVSA or FIND, Inc, in that they are trying to unite the Chinese student run organizations together. I think you'll see in the testimonies of the HKSA president in the clubs tab that there is no mention of other clubs like them within the area. NAICA is an organization that realized this very fact and was launched by our own UMBC students this year. Here is a link to their site in case you want to follow their growth: http://naica.org/
1. What is your organization's main goal and how do you think that you guys are affecting the Asian American community?
- Our main goal is to not only strengthen the Chinese american community, but to also help develop and train individuals and promote growth within the community. We'd like to believe that we are contributing to the community in a positive way and that is our purpose. By giving schools and individuals the opportunity to network and share with each other among different universities that would otherwise not have the chance to.
2. How do you personally feel about how Asian Americans are represented within media?
- I think there are the typical stereotypes of the nerdy Asians who are good at math, do well in school and etc. Although they're good things and somewhat true, there are just as many who don't do well in math and school. But a good majority of them fit the stereotype because its what we came to America for, to work hard and achieve a better way of living.
