Our Mission
Our assignment is about finding ways to advance the knowledge of Asian American Culture. Here is how we will do it:
Every semester at UMBC all of the clubs come out to the quad to attract some new people to join their club. Sprinkled among all of the sports, film, academic, and other clubs along the field are the Asian American clubs. On the surface level, they seem just like any other regular club; a group of young students that want to share their love of whatever they represent with the rest of the student body. Upon joining one Asian American club you are shown the culture of the club that you chose. But there is so much more. Let us take for example, the Vietnamese Student Association at UMBC. That VSA is under a larger foundation called MAUVSA, the Mid-Atlantic Union of Vietnamese Student Associations. Within MAUVSA, other VSA's from throughout the east coast are linked to each other. This includes VSA's from UMCP, JMU, GMU, GWU, and GU to name a few. All of these individual VSA's host cultural events and shows to educate the people on their campus and they also support each other as well! Seems pretty big right? Actually there is more. There are other foundations just like MAUVSA throughout the United States and they are all under an even larger foundation, UNAVSA, the Union of North American Vietnamese Student Associations.
In our Asian American Studies class, we've learned that the Asian American voice is there, but it is small. But is it really that small anymore? VSA is just a small example from one cultural group. Imagine if all of the Asian American clubs did what VSA does. In fact, upon joining all of these clubs you will find out that each and every Asian American culture is starting to use this very model to unite their people within the United States.
Now I have a question for you. What if we united all of the Asian American clubs together? What would it be called? Please come with us through this exciting journey to find out what this unity would be called. Welcome all to Asian America!
